Update on the infection

When I got here this morning, his nurse told me that the antibiotics appear to be working really well because he hadn't had a fever all night, and his heart rate and breathing had both slowed down! (His nurse Melissa is wonderful at giving us details about how he has been when we can't be there.) I just talked to his doctor during rounds and he seemed really positive about how Cole is responding to his antibiotics. Today they just decreased his oxygen flow from 3 to 1.5. They also went back down on his pain medication from 1 to .75. They hope to get him off of his pain medication in the next couple of days, and then they will start weaning his sedation drug. Yesterday Cole and I did what they call Kangaroo care, where I hold him skin to skin. It was pretty amazing, because the entire time held him that way his sats were the best they had been all day. The doctor said that the mother's body can help regulate the baby's body when something is too high or low (in Cole's case it was his temperature, heart rate and breathing). If Cole is able to maintain 1.5 flow on his oxygen then we are going to try nursing today too. We are back on scheduel as far as trying new things with him. The only downside to the infection is that he has to take the antibiotics 7 days past his first negative blood culture. That means we are here for at least another week. God Bless!
